Historical Analysis:

The old Convent of Sto. Domingo, located in the square of the same name, was founded by D. Francisco Páez de Espinosa and Da Catalina de Luján. Therefore, they became hereditary founders and patrons for their descendants and to be buried in the Main Chapel.

On April 29, 1553, the conditions were agreed upon with the Vicar General Fray Félix Ponce de León. The founders contributed nine houses and an orchard. That year the institution was celebrated and in a short time the convent was built with the patio that concerns us. The church in 1608 was just beginning.

It was opened to worship in 1617, under the invocation of Santa Bárbara. The Dominicans adopted the Benedictine scheme for its implementation. They maintain the cloister as a structural element, but the different bodies could be placed according to the available space, here they do so by placing the façade, tower and

convent facing the square and in line.

In 1834 his secularization occurs. The following year it is sold by the Confiscation law, passing to individuals. Ramón García Montalvo bought the property in 1884. It was given to her daughter Bonifacia García Serroche and her husband Luciano Dengra Gómez. In 1888 the convent was rebuilt given its poor state of conservation, according to the inscription on the staircase. The bad condition of the convent was partly due to the damage that the French caused during the war of independence; since the marble balustrades of the two cloisters were removed with a chisel, having to brick up the arches of the second cloister.

The convent was used as habitual residence. On the ground floor, the owners of the complex had installed a shop facing the Plaza de Sto. Sunday. Everything was sold here, from vehicle spare parts, armory, horse harness workshop, china shop, ammunition, sewing machines, etc. Due to the storage of ammunition and due to an oversight, a fire started that destroyed the main façade, which caused a total modification of the main façade. The upper part of the convent tower was also demolished due to its deterioration over time. The patio of the convent was used as stables for the merchants who came every Wednesday to set up their stalls in the Plaza de Sto. Sunday. Over time the convent became a family residence, where the children of the owners inhabited the wings of the convent as a home.

Currently, the convent house for housing continues to be preserved, with the cloister and the doorway of the church with some arcades in the nave and a coffered ceiling.
